Hobbies for Seniors: A Great Way to Spend Your Time

A senior woman painting, one of the many enjoyable hobbies for seniors.

Sometimes, we find ourselves passing time by watching T.V. or surfing the internet. While these are both options, it’s also important to find a leisure time activity you enjoy.

Having a hobby is important for people at all ages, but it’s especially important for seniors who have the luxury of newly found free time. You can find joy in reading, woodworking, biking, expressing your creativity through art projects and more. Plus, hobbies offer both mental and physical health benefits – keep reading to learn more.

Hobbies for Seniors Offer…

An Avenue for Stress Relief: By taking time out of your day to focus on pleasurable activities that you enjoy, you have a moment to destress. Hobbies give you the opportunity to step back and forget about the worries of everyday life, instead focusing on something you’re truly interested in that makes you happy.

A Way to Improve Physical Health: Exercise can turn from something we “have to do” to something we genuinely appreciate by finding a hobby that includes physical fitness. Some active hobbies include hiking, dancing and swimming.

An Opportunity to Socialize: One of the best ways to instantly connect with a person is to find a common interest. Hobbies allow you to start conversations with people holding similar interests to you, opening the door for engaging conversations and the opportunity for friendship.

A New Challenge or Experience: Hobbies offer you the opportunity to try something new with little pressure. Plus, along with being entertaining, new challenges offer brain stimulation that contributes to positive cognitive health.

A Better Sense of Purpose: Having an activity in your life that’s just for you and your happiness enriches your life. There’s nothing better for the mind and body than accomplishing a task and doing something that you love.

Take Time for Your Hobbies at Springpoint

Whether it’s been a hobby you’ve enjoyed for some time or a new, exciting adventure you want to start, we fully encourage you to get involved and ignite your passions within Springpoint communities. From woodworking and art studios, fitness centers, discussion groups and more, there’s never a shortage of things for residents to do.

Paula Westerman, a resident of The Atrium at Navesink Harbor, shares that she’s found a variety of exciting hobbies to try in the community: “I knew that there were a variety of activities offered and I was open to trying most, if not all, of them. I didn’t know that I would find them so enjoyable and stimulating. I joined the painting class, never having painted in my life. I’m doing better than I expected, but I can assure you there’s no great talent emerging! Who cares? It’s fun.”
