The Importance of Exercise for Seniors

Group of seniors exercising together.

We’ve heard it since we were kids – we need to make sure to keep our bodies moving and exercise. Doing so can help you achieve substantial health benefits, including a decreased risk of various diseases, increased brain health and the ability to engage in more daily living activities. We know we need to stay physically active, especially as we age – but finding senior exercise ideas that match your lifestyle can be tough.

At all Springpoint Life Plan communities, we offer opportunities to stay fit through LivWell. This award-winning holistic wellness program focuses on all seven dimensions of wellness, including physical wellness. We are happy to work with you to personalize your experience and learn your goals to share what available activities might be the most beneficial for you. To start, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite ways to exercise in our communities.

5 Senior Exercise Ideas

1. Take a Brisk Walk

Make your pace a little faster when going on a longer walk -brisk walking packs a powerful punch when consistently added to your routine at least three or four times a week. Need a little extra motivation? With our stunning campuses, you’ll want to get outside and enjoy the view on our walking trails.

2. Hit the Weight Room

Our state-of-the-art fitness centers offer you the perks of a gym membership without ever needing to step foot off of campus. With equipment like treadmills and free weights, you’ll have the freedom to create your own personalized workout plan. And with trained staff members available for any help or questions, you’re able to find a workout routine that fits in your schedule.

3. Work on Body Balance

Working on balance when exercising improves your stability and decreases the risk for falls. Classes like yoga and Tai Chi focus on posture, balance, stretch and upper and lower body strengthening. These exercises and classes are a great way to improve your quality of life while working on your level of physical wellness.

4. Take a Dip in in a Pool

Swimming is a highly beneficial, low-impact aerobic exercise. With the correct technique, you’re able to work out all muscles in your body without overworking your joints. Being in the water can also help alleviate aches and pains in the body. With classes offered like waterworks and aqua stretch, you can take a dip in indoor, heated pools for a low-impact exercise.

5. Get Involved in Friendly Competition

Team sports not only allow you to make friends, but it’s a fun way to get exercise in. Springpoint offers opportunities like shuffleboard, croquet and pickleball in our communities, just to name a few. Plus, getting involved in a little friendly competition with your neighbors and friends can make it easier for regular exercise to become part of your routine.
