Five Retirement Living Tips You Can Live By

Find ways to have a meaningful retirement

Retirement is an ideal time to relax, enjoy yourself, and de-stress. But no longer working on a daily basis can make you feel like you no longer have goals to work towards. It’s important to keep a sense of purpose, even during retirement living, by building meaningful activities into your routine.

Every day, no matter what you have planned, give your day a purpose. What do you hope to accomplish? Is it plenty of rest to catch up on lost sleep? Is it some form of physical activity, like golfing, swimming, playing tennis, or going for a walk with friends? Is it tending your garden, or something else? Setting little goals for yourself is key to a meaningful retirement, but beyond the little things, there are more beneficial things to do after retiring.

5 Tips to Find Meaning in Life After Retirement

Seniors have an increased risk of depression, anxiety, and isolation, and not feeling a sense of purpose in your life can lead to these mental and emotional health problems. Here are five ideas for incorporating more purpose into your retirement life.

Retirement Living Tip #1: Give back your time by volunteering.

Prior to retirement, you probably worked full-time in a job you may or may not have liked. You got up, went to work, completed your job duties, and came home. You did what you had to do to earn a living. But now that you’re retired, one of the best parts about volunteering is being able to do something you genuinely enjoy. Have you always admired doctors and other medical professionals but never got the chance to work in a healthcare field? Try volunteering at a local hospital. The opportunities are endless, but the key is to choose something you like.

Retirement Living Tip #2: Give to causes you care about.

If you’ve built wealth throughout your working days, consider donating to non-profit organizations and causes that are close to your heart. It’s amazing the sense of meaning and purpose you will feel from knowing you are making a difference in someone’s life, whether it’s donating to a children’s hospital, animal shelter, your church, or something else. You will never regret such a selfless act.

Retirement Living Tip #3: Set new goals for yourself.

We’re not talking about New Year’s Resolution goals that almost never get accomplished. We’re talking about conservative, attainable goals that push you to improve yourself, but also provide quick wins to increase your confidence. You need to feel like you can accomplish things, like you’ve done something important with your time and energy, and checking goals off your list is one way to do just that.

Retirement Living Tip #4: Create and complete a to do list.

If you haven’t already thought about things you want to do and places you want to see during your retirement, jot down a list now. You may only be able to cross off a few items, but how great will you feel doing so? Take that vacation you never got to take because of work. Go to that restaurant you avoided because your spouse doesn’t like that type of food. Do things now that you always wanted to do.

Retirement Living Tip #5: Appreciate the little moments.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day routines and normalcies we often take for granted. A great moto to live by is, “contentment is not fulfillment of what you want but the realization of what you have.” Cherish the things you have and the little moments of joy you experience as they’re happening. Take a moment to pause and smile when something makes you happy. Try to think positive and laugh more. Take a carefree approach. All of this can add more meaning to your retirement and in the grand scheme of things, create more joy in your life.
