Following our recent Leadership Summit, I’ve been reflecting on the conversations, shared experiences, and ideas that continue to influence how we approach leadership at Springpoint and across the senior living industry. We often measure success through outcomes such as quality of care, resident satisfaction, and operational performance—and behind all these critical measures stands a single unifying factor: leadership. Not leadership defined by title, but leadership that is intentionally developed, supported, and sustained over time.

A Pivotal Moment for Senior Living

With more than 30 years at Springpoint, I’ve seen this play out in many ways. I’ve witnessed it during moments of growth, as team members step confidently into new roles, and especially during some of our most challenging times, including the COVID-19 Pandemic, when our teams came together and led with resilience and compassion. Experiences like these reinforce a simple truth: leadership does not simply appear when you need it, it is developed well in advance.

Our field is now at a pivotal moment. Many seasoned leaders who have shaped senior living for decades are beginning to retire, while a new generation is entering the field with new ideas and expectations. The question is not whether change is coming, but whether we are ready and prepared for it.

Leadership as the Foundation of Success

At Springpoint, that preparation begins with a clear and strong commitment to leadership development. Through Springpoint University, we cultivate talent from within by leveraging the knowledge and expertise of our own team members to teach, mentor, and prepare others to lead. It’s a practical, real-world approach that builds confidence, strengthens skills, and helps ensure the next generation is ready to carry our culture forward.

We extend that focus through our Tomorrow’s Leaders Internship Program, which introduces students and early-career professionals to senior living. Participants gain hands-on experience and meaningful exposure to leadership, while also bringing fresh perspectives that challenge us to continue evolving.

Equally important is our commitment to recognition. Growth does not happen in isolation. When team members invest in their development, that effort should be acknowledged and celebrated. Recognition reinforces our values, strengthens engagement, and reflects a culture where leaders at every level actively mentor and support others.

We also cannot overlook the value of experience. Many of our team members have been with Springpoint for 25, 30, even 35 years, and the knowledge they carry is invaluable. It is our responsibility to ensure that knowledge is shared with and built upon by the next generation. When experience is paired with fresh perspectives and a strong foundation of development, it creates organizations that are grounded in what works while remaining open to what’s possible.

Leadership That Shapes the Resident Experience

Ultimately, that is what our residents need from us. They are not simply looking for a place to live, they are looking for a place that feels like home, supported by people who are compassionate, capable, and ready to lead. Leadership development is what makes that possible.

Investing in Leaders, Strengthening the Future

Leadership development is not a single program or initiative; it is the work itself. And it extends beyond any one organization. We should be cultivating leaders not only to strengthen our own teams, but to advance the entire senior living field. Whether someone’s journey continues with us or leads them elsewhere, the goal remains the same: to help them grow into leaders who make a meaningful impact.

As we look ahead, I encourage others across our field to continue investing in leadership at every level. The future of senior living depends on the leaders we develop today.
