Practicing Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness and meditation are two ways to connect with yourself and distress. Although different, these practices complement each other, and they often overlap. Mindfulness is the practice of being conscious of something, a mental state achieved by focusing on the present moment and becoming wholly aware of your current situation. Meditation is a technique that trains attention and awareness to achieve a mentally clear and emotionality stable state.

Mindfulness is something you’re able to practice at all times – not just something you have to set aside 20 minutes a day to focus on. It is an overall state of well-being and inner strength that allows you to get through tough times and stop stressors from having such a negative impact on your body. Mindfulness allows you to take control of your thoughts and feelings, offering the opportunity for you to approach stressful situations with composure. Throughout the day, assess your surroundings and make an effort to focus on the present moment.

A technique to achieve a state of mindfulness is meditation. Meditation is something every person can do – it doesn’t cost a thing or requires any special equipment. There are also many different types of meditation, some of the more popular being mantra meditation and movement meditation. New to meditation and not sure where to start?
